if you’re going to wear an ascot, tonight’s the night

I’ve never liked ascots. Fashionable, yes. Flashy, most definitely. Can flashy be toned down in a cool, everyday way? Not exactly. However, there are nights like New Years Eve where the over-the-topness of the ascot is quite welcome. In fact, it’s right at home on this special night. Remember that velvet/satin accented black blazer I suggested investing in some weeks ago? Yea, tonight. With an ascot. Crisp white shirt. Well polished lace-ups. Crisp white pocket square. Pull out all the stops without looking like the guy who’s trying too hard. Of course, if you’re going to a black-tie event, keep it formal and simple. The rest of us, however, going to some lounge or club where a going-out shirt, baggy-pant-clad, bowling-shoe steve madden “my club shoes”-type miscreant may sneak in must follow a different game plan.

I see unbuttoning the top 2 buttons (by midnight), with a nice dash of bold color from the ascot peakin’ through. Go loader with the blazer as you see fit. Perhaps peak lapels, perhaps some satin contrast, perhaps a velvet blazer all together. Depending on locale, jeans (dark jeans) or slacks. Remember to polish those shoes. No patent leather unless you’re actually wearing a tux, or you’re really confident in your ability to meld them with the satin trim of the blazer (best of luck). Stay tuned for my New Years get-up. –

happy new year! thanks indochino, don draper, gingham, well- polished narrow cap-toe oxfords, and other great things brought to light in 2008.
