We are all aware that there are some fundamental and universal rules to fashion.  They cover some of most antiquated basics, and they still hold relevance for the styles of today.  Now, don’t worry there is always the flexibility of breaking the rules – when done tastefully – but know when you are pushing it too far.  Yes I’m talking to you Mr. Gucci loafer, Gucci fanny pack, Gucci wallet, Gucci who knows what else.  Here at Manshion, I think it’d be fair to say there is beauty in subtlety.

First myth I’d like to slay with my blade and 300 Spartans behind me is the idea that a brand and it’s logo adorned will make people think you have style or money in your pocket.  Lies! People with money, usually seasoned and a bit older than say – me, prefer quality over quantity and reservation over flashiness.  They do not need logos plastered on the front of their shirts, on the heel of their shoes, etc.  Get clothes that fit, stitched with quality fabric, and you will prove way more than you can with a Louis bandana around your neck loosely tied with no functionality.

Second myth – the more you pay the better the quality.  This is a double-edged sword.  While it can be true, it can also be horrible wrong.  Get familiar with brands that fit you well and their quality and know what the going price is for the item you are looking to purchase.  As much as it important that these brands know their customer, it is important for you to know your product.

Third and final myth – individualism always trumps the universality of style.  Not always my friend.  Remember, style is a very individual choice, and it can tell people a lot about who you are.  However, you’d be surprised how much of your so-called individualism comes from less common sub-culture commercialism and to put it frankly – nothing is really new.  Fashion works in cycles and while certain things can be more fresh than others, it has likely been done in some sort of way before you ever thought to put it on.  There is no problem with being an individual about style but be conscious of what you are trying to convey, there are a lot of subtle avenues to experiment in that won’t make you look like a runway model for day-to-day activities.

Fashion is fun, not an obligation.  But it is also a billboard advertisement for you to other people so be aware.  Try new things, experiment, just be conscious of your dressing decisions.  Don’t dress for the trend, dress for the future you are planning to have.  Lastly, enjoy it.

    I completely agree with the individuality myth. You have to show that you know the rules in order to be able to break them. Throwing on seemingly random clothes to look like an individual is neither fashionable nor stylish.

    Couldn’t agree more on the logos or brands being plastered across an article of clothing. In fact, I find it can work the the other way. Often times, if a brand is so proudly identifiable, it’s to force the idea that if said person has brand, they have style.

    That being said, there are places on this globe that I have been (particularly Asia) where style isn’t nearly as important as the name on the chest. It doesn’t matter if it’s a lime green and khaki patchwork leather halter top for men…if it says Armani Exchange on it, it is simply amazing. As often the case, clothing won’t be purchased if the brand on the front is too small.

    Not to say that makes it right, but simply to give a counter point to my own.
